Kimmel Studio is a boutique architecture firm based in Annapolis, MD.
We think of architecture as art, and of each building and garden we design as a work of art that reflects the needs, sensitivities and ethos or each particular client. Clients do not hire us to merely produce a series of blueprints; rather, they commission a work of art. Our job is to produce a work of art which they will feel represents an extension of themselves.
We are well-versed in traditional architecture, so that if a client is interested in a building with a classical, farmhouse, colonial, shingle or Tudor style, we will enjoy designing it — and we will know how to do it.
Knowing tradition does not imply that we are bound by it. When designing a modern building, history helps us to decide when and where to tweak or even break traditional rules. The large glass windows of the contemporary barn house of the photo are modern, but the shape relies on traditional vernacular barns.
A Wide Range of Buildings
Because we design many homes along the shores of the bay (both Eastern and Western), we are acquainted with the critical area regulations that apply to waterfront properties. We designed this award-winning waterfront farmhouse and this popular bar taking into account the nature and rules of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
Most of the houses we design are large. This is not always the case, however, and we do welcome the challenge of creating small yet elegant spaces. We also design flats, memorials, museums, restaurants, campuses, sports stadiums — and their gardens. Big or small, traditional or modern, the buildings and gardens we design reflect our clients.
Restoration, Preservation and Renovation of Historic Buildings
We also provide planning and design services for historic sites and buildings for both public and private clients. As part of our preservation services, we conduct research and documentation efforts, and design historically sensitive architecture and landscape architecture. Kimmel Studio is the preservation architect for the restoration of an eighteenth-century Maryland mansion.

We welcome inquiries about new projects.
We have accomplished our mission not when we have designed a building that fits perfectly within a specific style, but when the client looks at the design and thinks: yes, this is me. In order to achieve this feeling of recognition, we engage in active listening and we encourage our clients to become active members of the design team. It is their house or their garden, not ours. That is why our designs are so varied: because our clients are so varied.
Still wondering if we are a good fit for your project? Please, feel free to contact us. You can send us an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) and we can schedule a meeting. Or, you can call us (410.571.3604) and we can discuss alternatives over the phone. Whatever works best for you.
