I don’t divide architecture, landscape, and gardening; to me they are one.

We are a boutique architecture firm based in Annapolis, MD.

We are an award-winning, design-oriented team of architects and landscape architects with decades of experience designing a wide range of buildings and gardens.

Our design responds to the stimuli of the environment.

At Kimmel Studio we believe in design that integrates into its surrounding and responds to the stimuli of the environment. We will provide you with a final product that gives form to your thoughts and needs while reflecting our exceptional ability to integrate the building with the landscape in a way that few do.

We have experience designing buildings and gardens in the Chesapeake Bay region.

Many of the buildings and gardens we design are located in the Chesapeake Bay area. Occasionally, however, we do design projects in other regions. See, for example, the interior architecture of this San Francisco flat. / Photo by Popartic/iStock / Getty Images

We apply sustainable architecture principles wherever we design a building or garden, but we live and work in the Chesapeake Bay region, and are therefore particularly familiarized with the plants, insects and animals of the bay and surrounding areas. Because we design many homes along the shores of the bay (both Eastern and Western), we are also acquainted with the stringent regulations that apply to waterfront properties. Experience with critical area regulations is key when designing a waterfront building or garden. We designed this award-winning waterfront farmhouse and this popular bar taking into account the nature and rules of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

We have experience restoring and renovating historic buildings.

We also provide planning and design services for historic sites and buildings for both public and private clients. As part of our preservation services, we conduct research and documentation efforts, and design historically sensitive architecture and landscape architecture. We pride ourselves in our deep knowledge of traditional architectural design.

We think of architecture as art, and we take pride not only in our designs but in how we present those designs. This drawing represents a traditional design.

Our historically sensitive design is very useful for our clients who seek to build or renovate a building. We are well-versed in traditional forms, so that if a client is interested in a building with a classical, farmhouse, colonial, shingle or tudor style, we will enjoy designing it — and we will know how to do it.

We also design award-winning modern architecture.

We also enjoy designing modern structures, such as this contemporary barn house. Even so, our solid knowledge of architectural history is always in the back of our mind. Knowing tradition does not imply that we are bound by it. When designing a modern building, the history of shapes helps us to decide when and where to tweak or even break traditional rules.

We design a wide range of buildings.

Most of the houses we design are large. This is not always the case, however, and we do welcome the challenge of creating small yet elegant spaces. Many of the houses we design are waterfront or historic homes, which means we have experience with critical area regulations. We also design flats, memorials, museums, restaurants, campuses, sports stadiums — and their gardens. Big or small, traditional or modern, the buildings and gardens we design reflect our clients.

We welcome inquiries about new projects.

Our office is located in Eastport, a neighborhood of Annapolis, MD. We are walking distance from downtown historic Annapolis, but unlike many of the offices located in downtown Annapolis, ours has its own parking lot. It is easy to park and our clients frequently drop by just to say hi.
